How to apply for an ABN in Australia (step by step)
Last reviewed 2026-07-17
An Australian Business Number (ABN) is an 11-digit number that identifies your business to government and other businesses. For most people starting out, getting an ABN is one of the first practical steps.
Do you need an ABN?
You generally need an ABN if you are carrying on an enterprise in Australia — for example invoicing clients, registering for GST, or dealing with government. A hobby is not enough. The Australian Business Register (ABR) can refuse applications that are not genuine businesses.
What to prepare before you apply
- Your tax file number (TFN) — speeds things up for sole traders
- Personal identity details that match your records
- Chosen business structure (sole trader, partnership, company, trust)
- If you are a company: Australian Company Number (ACN) from ASIC first
- Main business activity / industry description
- Business address and contact details
How to apply (online)
- Go to the Australian Business Register apply page.
- Choose the entity type that matches your structure.
- Complete the online form (identity, activity, addresses).
- Submit the application — ABN applications are free.
- Keep your application reference number.

How long does it take?
Many applications are processed quickly online, but some are reviewed manually if details need checking. If you applied as a company, remember the company must be registered with ASIC before the ABN.
After you get your ABN
- Put the ABN on invoices and quotes.
- Register a business name with ASIC if you trade under a name that is not your own personal name.
- Check whether you need GST, PAYG withholding or other tax registrations.
- Open a separate bank account for the business if you can.
